Record sponsorship gives Cleeve Cricketers an edge as they celebrate 70th anniversary

Cleeve Cricketers are not only celebrating their 70th anniversary this year, but also attracting a record amount of sponsorship – helping to give their two senior and four junior sides “a professional edge” as they compete against rival teams.

“Sponsorship at this level of the sport is just as important as it is for professional sides,” says Stuart Williams, the club’s Secretary and who has been playing for Cleeve himself on and off for the last 10 years or so. His own company, Williams Gunter Hardwick, has sponsored the club’s second team,

“We’re not a big village and we’re competing with sides who often have a lot more resources than us. This year we’ve managed to attract over £4,500 from very generous local companies and friends of the club – and as well as helping to fund our training activities, and improving the club’s facilities, has also allowed us to supply every player with good playing shirts … right down to our aged 6 – 10 children’s KWIK cricket section who have been given a Cleeve T-shirt and Kwik cricket ball. The 1st team have even secured training kit in addition.

“Being able to support our players and backroom personnel in this way is helping us to look and feel professional – as well as attract and retain the next generation of players.”

Founded in 1948, when just one side represented the club, Cleeve now has two senior teams play in the Bristol & District Cricket Leagues. They also boast junior sides at U11, U13 and U15 level and who play in the North Somerset Youth Cricket League, as well as a thriving KWIK cricket section for under tens.

“Cricket plays a big part in the local life of Cleeve,” says Stuart, “and having local youngsters being given high quality training and encouragement bodes incredibly well for the future of the sport and the club. Let’s hope that at least one or two of them follow in the famous footsteps of Chris Dent, the current Gloucestershire captain and who represented Cleeve at Under 17 level!

“All of our sides are having a good season performance wise, and we hope to build on this year’s success in 2019.”
